TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF DURING PREGNANCY: DIET - FOODS TO AVOID
Beef liver, which we warned against in our previous editions, is now safe to consume. The industry finally yielded to pressure to remove diethylstilbestrol from feed. Diethylstilbestrol was used years ago to prevent miscarriages, and mothers taking the drug produced daughters with a higher risk of developing vaginal cancer than daughters of mothers not exposed to the drug.
On 3 December 1960, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published an order prohibiting the use of sassafras in foods because it was found to cause cancer of the liver in animals. Sassafras may still be available in some parts of the country as a tea. It should be avoided during pregnancy. In 1977, the FDA raised concern about artificial sweeteners; they should also be avoided during pregnancy.
