BOTTLE-FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS FOR BABIES: FORMULA

Formula comes in several different forms and many different compositions. Discuss with your baby's caregiver which formula he or she recommends for your baby.

Composition

• Milk-based formula is made with cow's milk and fortified with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and fats.
• Soy-based formula is made from soybeans and is also fortified with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and fats. It's usually consumed by babies who are allergic to cow's-milk protein or are lactose intolerant.
• Iron-fortified formula is recommended for all babies from birth to twelve months to promote normal mental and physical development.
• Hydrolyzed-protein formula is cow's-milk-based, but with the proteins predigested. It's consumed by babies with severe protein sensitivity.

Packaging

• Ready-to-feed formula is premixed and ready to pour into a clean bottle. This is the most expensive formula, but also the most convenient.
• Powdered formula must be mixed with water. You can prepare one bottle of formula at a time.

Concentrated liquid formula must be diluted with water before it's poured into a bottle.
