INTRODUCTION - AWAKENING

In recent years, women's health has captured headlines and the national consciousness in what has been called a new—and long overdue—awakening.

Through the efforts of thousands of women across the country, members of Congress, physicians and other health professionals, scientists and prominent figures in the media, issues relating to women's health and well-being have come to the forefront of the public's and policymakers' attention. In fact, this movement has engendered a shift in consciousness with a new recognition that women's health deserves distinct attention from the scientific and health care policy communities. The result has been an unprecedented level of attention and resources directed toward improving medical research and health care services for women.

The new focus on women's health has developed, in part, from the changing role of women in our society, as well as changing demographics. Women currently make up 51 percent of the U.S. population and 45 percent of our nation's work force.
